New York Police Department footage shows the scene after a shooting by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Twenty-eight-year-old Oscar Belal was in a car when agents who were trying to arrest him opened fire seven times. His five-year-old son was in the car. Demonstrators took to the streets afterwards. New York officials, including the state’s governor and the city’s mayor, condemned the shooting. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said: “ICE operates with impunity, and they sow chaos and terror across our country. That they have killed far more of our neighbors than they could ever have claimed to save.” The Department of Homeland Security defended the agents’ actions, saying Belal had attempted to run them over. Data from TRAC Immigration shows that of more than 65,000 people in ICE detention in mid-July, more than 70 percent had no criminal conviction, and just four percent were convicted of violent crimes. Al Jazeera’s Kristen Saloomey says ICE arrests have doubled under the Trump administration, much to the public's surprise. Al Jazeera’s Kristen Saloomey reports from New York.
