Gaza reconstruction stalled as attacks continue, analyst says

Some families in Gaza have finally laid their loved ones to rest, but thousands of bodies remain buried under the rubble as reconstruction stalls. Israel continues attacks across the Strip despite a US-brokered ceasefire, while restrictions on heavy machinery and specialised equipment are hindering recovery efforts. The UN estimates more than 61 million tons of debris needs to be cleared. Sultan Barakat, professor of public policy at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, told Al Jazeera that Netanyahu's objective is to displace Palestinians from Gaza and that Israel has failed to honour key ceasefire commitments, including withdrawal and allowing sufficient food into the Strip. Barakat called the $2.5bn Board of Peace reconstruction plan a distraction, noting that Donald Trump had originally promised $10bn. He said an election defeat for Netanyahu might change the optics or slow some policies, but fundamentally little would change for Palestinians because no Israeli leader has presented a clear vision for two sovereign states.
