Gaza building collapse leaves 100 missing as media office warns of wider crisis

Gaza's media office spokesman Ismaeil al-Thawabta has held a briefing at the site of a collapsed residential building in Gaza City, where at least 100 people are missing and 20 bodies have been pulled from the rubble. He said buildings have been "turned into timed bombs and shelters for the displaced people, as there is not a single safe place in Gaza". He warned that the acute shortage of fuel, petroleum products and electricity, alongside Israel's restrictions on supplies entering Gaza, will have "deadly and fatal consequences" for life and humanitarian services across the territory. He said the shortages have halted equipment, electricity generators and civil defence machinery, leaving facilities unable to provide essential services and "issuing a death sentence against the sick people and the patients in hospitals". Al-Thawabta questioned the role of the United Nations and international humanitarian organisations, asking whether their role was limited to counting victims and issuing reports. He held Israel directly responsible for the continued destruction and the international community jointly responsible for the humanitarian collapse affecting more than 2.4 million civilians in Gaza. He called for the siege to be lifted, all crossings to be opened and heavy rescue equipment, fuel and spare parts to be allowed into Gaza, warning that the territory is heading towards "a humanitarian collapse without return".
