Falling Danube levels threaten Hungary's Paks nuclear plant as heat shifts east

Extreme heat across western Europe has shifted eastwards, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius forecast for Hungary, Romania and the Balkans in the coming days. Weeks of hot, dry conditions have left the Danube at exceptionally low levels, threatening river transport and energy supplies. Hungary's prime minister has warned that the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which relies on the river for cooling water, could face a temporary shutdown if levels fall further, with the situation potentially reaching critical levels by Monday.
