EU proposes ‘Kids Act’ to restrict social media access for children

The European Union has introduced the EU Kids Act, a legislative proposal aimed at protecting children from the potential harms of social media. The proposal would introduce age-specific restrictions, including a ban on social media access for children under 12 and supervised “mini accounts” for those aged 13 and 14. For older teenagers, the plan would require platforms to remove or limit features considered addictive. In Belgium, some schools have already introduced phone bans, with teachers saying the measures have encouraged more interaction among students. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the proposed legislation would require major technology companies to implement stronger safety measures.
