Chile-US trade talks end without deal amid tariff pressure to join Shield of the Americas

Two days of Chile-US talks over new tariffs on Chilean exports have ended without a breakthrough. Washington says negotiations will continue only if Chilean ministers stop publicly criticising the measures. Chile disputes the US justification for an additional 2.5 percent tariff, which Washington says is linked to forced labour in supply chains. Critics in Chile argue the tariffs are being used to pressure the government into joining the US-backed Shield of the Americas security alliance. The alliance is intended to tackle drug trafficking and organised crime, but critics warn it could undermine Chilean sovereignty. Chile's government has so far resisted joining the alliance, despite pressure from Washington on security and defence policy. Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman reports from Santiago, Chile.
