Cambodia scam crackdown drives cybercrime networks worldwide: Expert

Cambodia says it has shut down 800 suspected online scam sites, but criminal networks may have simply moved elsewhere. Jason Tower, a senior expert at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, told Al Jazeera that cyber-scams had become a major part of Cambodia’s economy by 2023, with some reports estimating the criminal market at about 40 percent of GDP. He said the closures amounted to a “mass clearance operation” rather than the full dismantling of the industry, as many suspected operators left the country.
