Tensions are escalating in Belgium's capital, Brussels, as police confront demonstrators during protests involving trade union members and young people demanding better education conditions. Fires were set in the streets, with protesters throwing projectiles towards police and adding bins, traffic signs and electric bikes to the flames. Police deployed water cannons as confrontations intensified. Many young demonstrators say they have been inspired by protests in neighbouring France and are frustrated by conditions in their schools. The unrest follows protests in the Belgian city of Liège that descended into riots, prompting the mayor to ban gatherings of more than three people. Al Jazeera's Rosie Birchard reports from Brussels.
