Europe’s “summer that burned” stretches from Mediterranean mountains to northern forests, turning Belgium’s High Fens – the country’s “green lung” – into a smouldering wasteland. But the most devastating impact of soaring temperatures happens far from the fires, in care homes and apartments where vulnerable people die in silence. In June alone, Europe records about 16,000 excess deaths, with Belgium’s mortality up 48% – double France’s rise and far above the Netherlands. Al Jazeera's Peter Smith reports from High Fens in eastern Belgium.
