At least 12 killed in Saturday suicide bombing in northwestern Pakistan

A suicide bomber targeted a police and customs checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing at least 12 people and injuring 35 others. The attack involved a vehicle-borne explosive device that was rammed into the checkpoint, which is in a strategically important area linking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Punjab. Gunmen later targeted an ambulance responding to the blast, according to the report. The victims included security personnel and passersby, with women and children among those killed and wounded. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although Pakistani security sources have pointed to the Pakistani Taliban, or TTP, as a possible perpetrator. Pakistan has accused the Afghan Taliban government of providing safe haven to armed groups and has carried out cross-border strikes into Afghanistan in response to attacks it says originate there.
