Argentines protest Milei's austerity during Saint Cajetan pilgrimage

Argentinians have taken to the streets of Buenos Aires to protest against President Javier Milei's austerity measures. Catholic faithful, trade unions and social movements voiced frustration over the country's economic situation during the annual pilgrimage to Saint Cajetan, Argentina's patron saint of work. Pilgrims lined up for hours to reach the sanctuary, praying for work, bread and dignity, while labour unions and social movements marched to the presidential palace demanding jobs, fair wages and stronger social protections. Milei came to power promising to fix the economy through one of the toughest austerity plans in the country's history, cutting government spending and a third of its ministries, and has since brought down inflation and stabilised the economy. But his popularity has fallen to its lowest level since he took office in 2023, amid corruption scandals, the harsh austerity programme and growing frustration that improved economic indicators have yet to reach ordinary Argentines.
