AI leaders sound the alarm over runaway risks of the technology: Analysis

The CEO of one of the world's largest AI companies says research into the technology should slow down. Anthropic's Dario Amodei says AI systems are becoming too sophisticated for humans to control, a call echoed by OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Toby Walsh, chief scientist of the AI Institute at the University of New South Wales, says the "kill us all" scenario is fantastical, but dangerous capabilities are real, citing an Anthropic report on bad actors using its bot for bioweapon research. He points to massive spending, over a billion dollars a day, and newly discovered "swarms" of coordinating AI agents as drivers of the risk. Walsh says race dynamics between companies have blocked regulation, though firms increasingly welcome oversight themselves. Still, the UK has rejected a proposed AI "kill switch," and similar resistance exists in the US, driven partly by fears of losing ground to China.
