Wednesday, 27 May 2026: The headline macroeconomic event this week comes on Thursday, with the latest release of the US personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge. Economists estimate that the index rose 3.8% in the year to April, up from 3.5% in March, driven primarily by rising energy prices. The core measure, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is expected to be up 3.3%, versus 3.2% a month earlier. Ther report could reinforce expectations that the Federal Reserve may maintain its higher-for-longer narrative on interest rates. Meanwhile, markets remain sensitive to oil price volatility as a result of the Iran war, though major indices such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq continue to rally, buoyed by tech stocks.
