Tether (USDT), the largest stablecoin by market capitalization, is set to relaunch on the Bitcoin network, enabling private settlements via the Lightning Network through the RGB and UTEXO protocols. This integration marks a return to the blockchain where USDT was first launched in 2014.
UTEXO, a joint venture formed by Boosty Venture Studio, Fulgur Ventures, and Tether Investments, is leading the initiative. The company has developed a software stack including APIs, developer tools, UI components, and a mint bridge to facilitate these transfers. UTEXO's co-founder, Viktor Ihnatiuk, stated that the objective is to allow USDT to move on Bitcoin instantly, privately, and with predictable costs, avoiding the inefficiencies and multiple fees sometimes associated with current platforms.
The RGB protocol, a combination of Bitcoin's UTXO security model, client-side validation, and the Lightning Network, is designed to enhance privacy by bypassing the account-based structures common on other blockchains. This development aims to expand the utility of stablecoins within the Bitcoin ecosystem, potentially enabling more complex financial applications.
