Key facts
- 58 Chinese universities and 62 technology labs were targeted.
- The "1286 list" restricts US research funding to listed entities.
- Tsinghua University, with ties to US business leaders, was among those named.
Representative John Moolenaar, chairman of the House Select Committee on China, has requested the Pentagon add 58 Chinese universities and 62 technology laboratories to a list that prohibits US research funding to these entities. The lawmaker cited national security concerns, a move Beijing has decried as "Cold War-style overreach."
Several of the targeted institutions focus on critical areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. The Defence Department already has a policy barring research funding to entities on this list, viewing collaboration with such schools as a compliance risk. The department is also investigating 30 US schools for potential collaboration with institutions on the list.
Tsinghua University, a prominent Chinese institution with alumni in the country's business and political elite, was among those Moolenaar asked to be included. Some US business leaders, including CEOs from Nvidia, Apple, and AMD, serve on the advisory board of Tsinghua's business school.
