Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip have resulted in the deaths of four children within the past five days, according to a statement from UNICEF. The attacks also led to the destruction of humanitarian aid supplies and damage to essential water infrastructure.
The children, aged between two and 16, were killed in separate incidents. One child succumbed to wounds sustained in a prior week's strike. Additionally, on Tuesday, five other children, aged eight to 17, suffered life-changing injuries from live fire or shrapnel following strikes.
A warehouse belonging to a UNICEF partner was heavily damaged, leading to the destruction of over $770,000 worth of nutrition supplies intended for more than 45,000 children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. Furthermore, a UNICEF-supported water well and desalination facility that serves over 4,000 people in Deir al-Balah was severely damaged on Monday, necessitating water trucking from alternative sources.
Separately, an explosive munition detonated approximately 30 meters from a UN convoy carrying fuel from the Kerem Shalom crossing as it passed through the "Yellow Line" in Rafah. While the explosion caused a minor mechanical issue to one vehicle, no casualties were reported among the convoy.
OCHA emphasized the need for the protection of civilians and civilian objects, including humanitarian facilities and infrastructure. The UN and its partners are working to address risks from unexploded ordnance, but authorization for removal equipment has not yet been granted. The World Health Organization also reported evacuating 106 patients and 132 companions from Gaza in the past week, though thousands more await medical evacuation.
