The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on August 16 that Russia has lost approximately 1,467,320 troops since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,510 casualties Russia suffered over the past day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment losses for Russia, including 12,270 tanks, 25,151 armored combat vehicles, 47,007 artillery systems, and 463,404 unmanned aerial vehicles. Russia has also reportedly lost 35 ships and boats and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed its own losses, citing operational secrecy. However, independent Western think-tank reports suggest Russian casualties significantly exceed Ukraine's. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the ratio to be "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1." A January 2026 CSIS report projected Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
While Ukrainian officials rarely disclose figures, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in a February 4 interview that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in action since the war's start, with many more missing in action. The intensity of fighting and drone warfare has made body retrieval and confirmation difficult for Ukraine.
