The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on August 13 that Russia has lost approximately 1,462,970 troops since the full-scale invasion commenced on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,310 casualties sustained by Russian forces in the preceding 24 hours.
In addition to personnel losses, the report details significant equipment attrition for Russia, including 12,262 tanks, 25,130 armored combat vehicles, 133,405 vehicles and fuel tanks, 47,824 artillery systems, 2,023 multiple launch rocket systems, and 1,562 air defense systems. Ukraine claims Russia has also lost 439 aircraft, 354 helicopters, 457,973 unmanned aerial vehicles, 2,215 unmanned ground systems, 34 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine's General Staff has maintained operational secrecy regarding its own losses during the conflict. However, independent Western think-tank analyses suggest Russian casualties significantly outweigh those of Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has estimated the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian losses to be between 2:1 and 2.5:1. A January 2026 CSIS report projected Ukraine's casualties to be between 500,000 and 600,000 from February 2022 to December 2025, with 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
While official figures from Ukraine are rarely disclosed, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action, with a considerable number also missing in action. The intensity of drone warfare and ongoing combat operations makes retrieving and confirming the identities of fallen Ukrainian soldiers extremely challenging.
