Burnham's remarks last month, where he credited the club's Abu Dhabi owners with being "a huge partner in the building of modern Manchester," sparked controversy in light of the Premier League's recent findings. An independent commission determined that Manchester City breached financial regulations between 2009 and 2018 by arranging "sham" commercial deals with sponsors, which were in fact disguised funding schemes from Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan's Abu Dhabi United Group Investment & Development Ltd.
Burnham's office later clarified that he acknowledged the seriousness of the judgment and that those responsible for wrongdoing should face consequences. In an interview for the Rest is Politics podcast, Burnham said he would "put out there" everything he had done to work with the club's owners as mayor, emphasizing that his meetings were not recent, with only one significant meeting occurring in 2021.
