Uber has officially agreed to acquire German food delivery company Delivery Hero for $14.8 billion, a deal that will establish Uber as the largest food delivery service globally outside of China. The acquisition, which has the unanimous backing of Delivery Hero's board, values the company at €13 billion.
As part of the transaction, Delivery Hero will sell its business in 14 markets, where Uber Eats already operates, to New York-based investment firm SSW Partners for $1.6 billion. The combined entity will operate across nearly 100 markets in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia. Uber, which was already Delivery Hero's largest shareholder, has set a minimum acceptance threshold of 50% plus one share for its takeover offer. Prosus, another significant shareholder, has agreed to sell its 17% stake.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the deal will nearly double the number of markets where Uber offers both mobility and delivery services, creating a proven platform expected to generate significant long-term value. The acquisition is expected to face regulatory scrutiny.
