President Donald Trump stated late on Monday that he does not believe China and Russia are assisting Iran in the ongoing conflict, asserting that both nations have too much to lose from such involvement. Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that if they were helping Iran, it would be at a very low level, but he did not believe they were involved 'at all.'
Trump had previously expressed trust in China and Russia to remain neutral in the Iran war, warning in July that any involvement would be 'very bad for them.' The United States and Iran have been at war since February 28, following US and Israeli attacks on Iran, with Tehran responding with strikes on Israel and Gulf states hosting US bases. Thousands have been killed and millions displaced since then.
Trump had previously described Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin as 'neutral' during the Iran war. Moscow and Beijing maintain close ties with Tehran. Russia has indicated that the Iran war could lead to a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, while Beijing has condemned the US attacks on Iran as a violation of its sovereignty.
Last month, Trump had warned Xi against providing support to Iran during the Chinese leader's visit to Washington, and the US ambassador to China stated at the time that China had assured the US it would not do so. This warning came amid reports that China had supplied Iran with shoulder-fired air-defense missile launchers and that Tehran had found ways to evade oil sanctions with Chinese assistance. In September, Trump dismissed a report that Iran had acquired satellite images of a Jordanian base from Chinese entities before an attack that killed three US troops in July.
