Tesla anticipates releasing its unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) software for private vehicles around the second quarter of 2027. However, the advanced driving feature will initially be confined to specific geofenced areas where the company currently operates its Robotaxi service. This limitation means that while Teslas may drive themselves, their operational range will be restricted to a small fraction of the total road network in the US. The Robotaxi service is currently active in parts of Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Tesla's VP of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, indicated that the company needs to integrate private vehicles into its existing fleet management systems for full autonomy within these zones. He also emphasized the difficulty of solving the autonomous driving problem, suggesting that competitors face a monumental challenge.
