SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is challenging the court's property division in his ongoing divorce suit with his former wife, Roh Soh-yeong, who was awarded 33.3 percent of their shared property subject to division. Chey submitted a document to the Supreme Court on Monday as part of his appeal against the Seoul High Court's decision ordering him to pay 944 billion won (US$707.8 million) to Roh.
The appellate court's ruling in its second trial excluded an alleged 30 billion-won slush fund from former President Roh Tae-woo as Roh's contribution to the marriage, deeming it illegal funds. Despite this exclusion, the court set Roh's share at 33.3 percent, a figure Chey's side disputes as illegal. Chey's side also contested the court's decision to factor in the significant increase in SK shares, which surged from around 160,000 won during the first trial to 800,000 won by the time of the retrial, when determining Roh's share.
Roh's side has until Tuesday to file a countering document with the Supreme Court. Chey initiated divorce proceedings in 2017, having admitted two years prior to having an extramarital affair and a child. Chey and Roh married in 1988 and have three children.
