A luxury estate in Hillsborough, California, inspired by Lake Como, has been sold for $70 million to an individual reportedly working in the artificial intelligence sector. This transaction sets a new record for the town and represents the most expensive home sale in northern California this year.
The property, known as "Villa de Verano," was initially listed at $88 million and spent just under five months on the market. The estate encompasses a 12,400-square-foot residence with six bedrooms and amenities such as a gym, theater, spa, and aquarium. The 12-acre grounds feature a pool, rose garden, amphitheater, guest house, and a sports area with seven courts.
Listing agent Jennifer Gilson of Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty stated that the buyer is a man in the AI industry, highlighting a trend of increasing demand from this sector in the ultra-luxury real estate market. This sale is seen as a significant indicator of a new tech wealth boom influencing home prices in the region.
Recent analyses indicate a substantial rise in homes selling significantly above asking price in San Francisco. The brokerage Compass noted a market increasingly divided by income and proximity to AI-focused employment centers. Gilson also observed a rise in ultra-wealthy buyers pursuing off-market deals. Median home prices in San Mateo County have risen by 8.5%, while San Francisco County has seen a more than 20% increase in median prices over the past year.
