Russia attacked Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with ballistic missiles, drones, and guided bombs on Sunday, killing at least six people and wounding dozens, authorities said. The attacks highlighted Ukraine’s shortage of U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems.
In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, three people died and 20 were injured when a grocery store was struck. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov stated on Telegram that two children were among the injured. Pictures posted online showed damaged buildings and burned-out vehicles.
In a separate attack in western Ukraine, three people were killed. The capital, Kyiv, also came under ballistic missile attack overnight, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko reporting three injuries after debris sparked a fire on the upper floors of a residential apartment building.
According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 41 missiles and 125 drones across Ukraine overnight, with President Volodymyr Zelensky saying most of the missiles targeted the capital. Russia's Defense Ministry stated that the attack on Kyiv targeted sites linked to the Ukrainian military.
Separately, a strike on two oil tankers at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal off Russia's Black Sea halted oil loadings. The consortium reported a fire aboard one tanker, the ASIA, which was extinguished, with no casualties or oil spills.
