Russia's Digital Development Ministry has proposed building data centers underground and equipping them with drone defenses following a series of Ukrainian drone strikes on critical infrastructure. The ministry outlined protection standards for data centers based on their strategic importance.
The proposed underground data centers and enhanced defenses aim to protect Russia's digital infrastructure from further Ukrainian drone attacks, which could disrupt state functions, banking services, and impact AI development and military technology.
Russia's Digital Development Ministry has recommended building data centers underground and equipping them with drone defense systems following a series of Ukrainian drone attacks on critical infrastructure. The ministry's guidelines, reported by Kommersant on October 25, categorize data centers into three tiers based on their strategic importance and the potential impact of outages.
These measures come after Ukrainian drones targeted three Yandex data centers, a Sberbank facility, and a VK data center between October 8 and October 18. The concentration of approximately 80% of Russia's data centers in the Moscow region makes them vulnerable to long-range drone strikes. The proposed protections include camouflaging sites, reinforcing structures, and deploying electronic warfare and drone defense systems. Earlier, on October 16, Kemerovo Oblast governor Ilya Seredyuk suggested utilizing depleted mines and quarries for data center construction due to their natural protection.
