Russell Brand's trial for rape and sexual assault commenced on Wednesday at Southwark Crown Court in London, with prosecutors characterizing the actor-comedian as a "ruthless, calculated and manipulative sexual predator." Brand, 51, denies all seven charges, which involve alleged assaults on six women spanning from 1999 to 2009.
During the opening of the prosecution's case, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC told jurors that Brand used his celebrity status and force to assault women, describing him as having an "indiscriminate and voracious" desire for sexual contact and that "women were simply a means to an end."
Karmy-Jones detailed alleged incidents including rape in a hotel room, an indecent assault at MTV, sexual assault and oral rape at a bar, and further assaults at Brand's home and the Hammersmith Apollo. Brand, wearing a pinstripe suit, stood in the dock as his defense was presented. He has previously denied all allegations.
Brand arrived at court to a crowd of photographers and journalists, stating he felt "blessed" and "hopeful" for good outcomes for everyone involved. His wife, Laura Gallacher, was present in court.
