Bangladesh has signalled that a high-level visit to India is contingent on a more favourable diplomatic environment, specifically demanding the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives. Relations between the two neighbours soured in 2024 when Hasina fled to India during an uprising against her government. Bangladesh's foreign ministry spokesperson, Shahidul Karim, stated that a "propitious environment" must be created for a potential visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and that Dhaka awaits India's response to its extradition requests. Hasina, who denies charges of ordering a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising for which she was sentenced to death in absentia in November 2025, recently stated her intention to return to Bangladesh. Bangladesh's foreign ministry called her statement an affront to the country's sovereignty.
