State Rep. Angie Nixon secured a significant progressive victory by winning Florida's Democratic Senate primary, defeating Alexander Vindman, a former army intelligence officer and whistleblower in Donald Trump's first impeachment.
In other primary contests in Florida, Republican Rep. Byron Donalds won his party's nomination for governor, positioning himself to potentially become the state's first Black governor. Donalds is part of a historic slate of Black gubernatorial nominees nationwide. He will face David Jolly, who won the Democratic nomination.
Longtime U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz also won her primary in a diverse, redistricted South Florida seat, defeating U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and three other candidates. Wasserman Schultz, a former national party chair, was seeking her 12th term.
Meanwhile, a candidate endorsed by Donald Trump, Catalina Lauf, lost her race to Jim Schwartzel.
