Pakistan interior minister heads to Tehran amid regional tensions

Naqvi's trip occurs at a critical juncture in the Middle East, with the US and Iran engaged in a protracted conflict. Iran has maintained control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil and gas shipping route, while the US has implemented measures to pressure Iran's economy. The region has also seen intensified fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis, raising concerns over energy infrastructure and shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that while Pakistan could raise regional issues, there was no indication Naqvi was carrying a specific message or proposal from Washington. He described the visit as part of routine bilateral engagement. Pakistan has previously acted as a mediator between Iran and the US, helping to broker an interim peace deal in June that has since faltered. Islamabad has urged a return to dialogue to resolve the conflict.

Naqvi has made several visits to Tehran in recent months as part of Pakistan's mediation efforts. The visit follows a call between Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, during which Dar emphasized the importance of uninterrupted energy supplies and safe passage for ships.
