King Haakon VIII formally pledged an oath of allegiance to Norway's constitution before parliament on Tuesday, marking a significant step in his succession following the death of his father, King Harald V. Harald V died on Friday at the age of 89, concluding a 35-year reign.
Haakon VIII, 53, promised to uphold the 1814 constitution with his 22-year-old daughter, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, by his side. The new king pledged to govern Norway in accordance with its constitution and laws. Norway does not hold a formal coronation ceremony.
Queen Mette-Marit, Haakon VIII's wife, was absent from the 17-minute ceremony due to complications following a lung transplant in June. A pulmonologist stated she is experiencing common post-transplant issues and requires observation.
King Harald V, who was widely appreciated for his warmth and dedication to national unity, will be buried on September 9. Tens of thousands of Norwegians have paid their respects to the late king at the royal palace chapel, where his casket lies in state until September 8. Support for the monarchy has reportedly risen recently.
