Russia's invasion of Ukraine has prompted NATO to re-evaluate its defense technology priorities, with counter-drone systems and space-based surveillance emerging as critical needs, according to Ari Jonsson, president of the NATO Innovation Fund. The 1 billion euro fund, supported by 24 NATO member states, is actively seeking investments to fast-track the development of dual-use technologies, particularly along NATO's eastern flank.
Jonsson noted that the increased presence of drones in NATO countries has significantly altered the perception of threats. Lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine have directly influenced the fund's investment strategy. Poland has been identified as an attractive location for investment due to its substantial defense spending, receptiveness to new technologies, and robust engineering sector.
The fund is also looking beyond traditional defense contractors to identify next-generation defense technologies. To facilitate this, the NATO Innovation Fund is establishing a base in Warsaw to expedite the discovery and integration of promising innovations. Polish Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski stated that the fund represents the first major non-Polish entity to create a significant presence in the country.
