Filmmaker Nathan Fielder and director Lance Oppenheim collaborated on the documentary "You Can See Everything," which examines the persona of Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes as she prepared to begin her 11-year prison sentence for fraud. Holmes and her husband, Billy Evans, reportedly sought to shape her public image before her surrender.
Fielder, known for his satirical docu-reality work, questioned Holmes's claims of innocence, with Holmes stating she "didn't commit any crime" and that public perception of her is untrue. The film also touches on Fielder's metatextual comedy style, where the lines between performance and reality are blurred.
During filming, Holmes and Evans were reportedly displeased with a New York Times profile. Holmes claimed her quote about Amanda Seyfried's portrayal in "The Dropout" was taken out of context. Evans also created an AI avatar of Holmes.
After Holmes entered prison, Fielder attempted to recreate their conversations from memory, working with Seyfried to script and refine the dialogue. Seyfried eventually broke character to state Holmes was responsible for her own situation.
