Malaysia halts new Chery Omoda 5 registrations after axle failure

Malaysia's Road Transport Department (JPJ) has temporarily suspended the vehicle type approval certificate for the Chery Omoda 5 and halted new registrations of the model following a recent incident where a vehicle's rear axle detached while in motion. The suspension is a precautionary measure pending the completion of technical investigations into potential safety risks.

JPJ director general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that the department takes the widely circulated reports seriously and will not compromise on any non-compliance that could endanger road users. Chery Malaysia has been instructed to identify all potentially affected vehicles based on component part numbers, production batches, and vehicle identification numbers, and to carry out a recall for inspection and corrective action. JPJ will also conduct a technical audit of Chery's production and assembly lines, as well as its axle component suppliers, to ensure compliance with manufacturing practices, quality control systems, and safety standards.

This incident is the second reported rear axle detachment involving the Omoda 5 model in Malaysia within two years. A similar event in April 2024 led to a JPJ investigation and a recall of 600 units by Chery Malaysia. The renewed scrutiny comes as Chery, China's largest passenger car exporter, expands its global presence.
