Lucid Motors has announced a significant cost-saving initiative aimed at achieving $1.4 billion in cash reductions by 2026. This strategic move, led by new CEO Silvio Napoli, is designed to address the company's mounting losses and growing EV inventory. The plan involves reducing capital expenditures by $500 million and cutting operating expenses by $200 million. Additionally, Lucid anticipates saving between $600 million and $800 million through inventory reduction, with recent workforce layoffs and production adjustments contributing an estimated $158 million annually.
Despite these efforts, Lucid reported a second-quarter net loss of $1.26 billion, or $3.30 per share, a wider deficit than the previous year, though revenue rose to $405 million. The company stated that these operational changes, coupled with recent financing, should provide sufficient liquidity well into 2027.
Beyond cost controls, Lucid is prioritizing key growth areas. These include the development of a mid-sized electric vehicle platform, the completion of its factory in Saudi Arabia, and advancing its robotaxi program in partnership with Uber and Nuro. A new business unit, Lucid Technologies, has been established to focus on AI and digital advancements for these initiatives, with regular production for the robotaxi service set to begin in the fourth quarter for a late 2026 launch.
