Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir stated that budget constraints are weakening the IDF's operational readiness, citing a significant funding shortfall amid ongoing multi-front deployments. The dispute involves the Defense and Finance ministries, impacting procurement programs.

The warning highlights potential vulnerabilities in Israel's defense capabilities due to financial constraints, particularly as the nation faces heightened tensions and multiple active fronts.
Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has issued a stark warning that a significant budget shortfall is undermining the operational readiness of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Zamir stated that the army is currently stretched thin across multiple fronts, including Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank, while simultaneously contending with depleted funds.
Speaking during a multi-front situation assessment, Zamir announced increased readiness levels and ordered reinforced deployments in Judea and Samaria ahead of the upcoming Jewish holiday period. He emphasized that operational readiness would not be reduced during the holidays and that the IDF remains focused on defending Israel's security.
Israeli media reports indicate the army faces a budget shortfall of approximately 40 billion shekels ($12.3 billion), largely attributed to ongoing operational expenses and reserve-duty costs. This funding dispute between the Defense and Finance ministries is also affecting military procurement programs, including planned acquisitions of fighter jets and munitions. The initial 2026 defense budget was set at roughly 143 billion shekels.
