Israeli strikes in southern and central Gaza on Thursday killed at least five Palestinians, according to Palestinian health officials. Medics reported two deaths near the Tuffah neighbourhood, a third from tank shelling in Zeitoun, one person killed in an airstrike on a tent encampment in western Gaza City, and another death from an attack on a vehicle in Khan Younis. Witnesses also reported an airstrike on a residential building in Deir Al-Balah.
These deaths add to over 1,100 Palestinians killed by Israeli attacks since an October ceasefire took effect, according to Gazan health officials. The truce has not stopped near-daily Israeli strikes, with conflict monitor ACLED reporting a surge in air- and drone strikes in June to the highest monthly total since the ceasefire.
The Israeli military stated that one of the strikes, in Deir el-Balah, was targeting a militant. A strike on Sunday killed Zaher Abu Salem, whom the military described as an Islamic Jihad member involved in the Oct. 7 attack. A 13-year-old girl was also killed by shrapnel from tank shelling on Sunday.
Since the October ceasefire, Gaza health officials report 1,045 Palestinians killed and 3,380 injured. The Palestinian Ministry of Health states that a total of 73,054 Palestinians have been confirmed killed and 173,480 injured since Israel launched its war in Gaza in October 2023. The Israeli military says five Israeli soldiers have been killed by militants since the ceasefire.
