Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for greater unity and cooperation among Muslim nations to establish regional security, peace, and stability. Speaking at the 40th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, Pezeshkian also condemned what he termed US-Israeli aggression against Iran, asserting that the country is strong and knows how to defend itself.
Pezeshkian met with Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council President Faiq Zidan, emphasizing that strengthening convergence among Muslim countries is essential. He stated that the region's resources attract external powers seeking to exploit them by creating divisions. The Iranian president urged Muslim countries to expand their cultural, commercial, social, political, and economic ties to resolve misunderstandings and build foundations for greater regional security. He suggested that a greater unity could pave the way for the US exit from the region, allowing regional governments to establish a locally driven model of stability.
During his meeting with Zidan, Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for Iraq's role in combating terrorism and for hosting pilgrims. Zidan, in turn, praised Iran's efforts against terrorism and highlighted the potential gains from joint security, economic, social, and cultural initiatives. He also stressed that stronger political and security relations could bolster regional stability and help contain Israel, acknowledging Iran's central role.
Separately, Major General Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, met with Zidan and stated that the United States has no place in the region's future, asserting that regional countries will determine their own destiny. Rezaei also called for resolving the issue of Iran-opposed groups along the Iran-Iraq border.
Earlier discussions between Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Ghalibaf and Iraqi officials focused on strengthening bilateral ties, including security, political, economic, and cultural issues, with a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding expected.
