An independent committee investigating Hong Kong's deadliest fire in decades has submitted its final report to Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu. The blaze at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po on November 26, 2025, killed 168 people and displaced nearly 5,000 residents. The judge-led panel's report spans more than 10 chapters and singles out four government bodies for accountability. Senior Counsel Victor Dawes, representing the committee, stated in July 2026 that the government had an "unshirkable responsibility" for regulatory oversight, suggesting departments including the Housing Bureau's Independent Checking Unit, Fire Services, Buildings, and Labour Departments bore a share of responsibility. Lee has pledged to implement reforms and pursue accountability upon receiving the report.
