Léa Salamé, a prominent French journalist and anchor for France TV's primetime news broadcast, the 20h, has announced she will temporarily step down from her role. This decision comes as her partner, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Raphaël Glucksmann, officially launched his bid for the French presidency.
Salamé stated in an Instagram post that the 20h broadcast will feature interviews with candidates and campaign reports, making her position untenable. "Wherever the campaign takes place, I’ll step aside. Everywhere else, I am and will remain a journalist," she wrote.
Questions regarding a potential conflict of interest have surrounded Salamé's role since Glucksmann, who has long expressed presidential ambitions, indicated he would run to succeed Emmanuel Macron. Glucksmann announced his candidacy on TF1, a major competitor to France TV.
