Elon Musk has become the largest political donor of the 2026 US midterm election cycle, having spent approximately $366 million on conservative candidates and right-wing causes. This rapid political spending, with over $276 million allocated since July, aims to influence key races that will determine control of the US Senate. The figures were first reported by The New York Times and are set to be released in a federal filing on Thursday.
Musk's current spending surpasses his contributions during the 2024 presidential election, where he invested nearly $300 million into Donald Trump's re-election campaign. This renewed political engagement reasserts the SpaceX and Tesla CEO as a top Republican megadonor and amplifies his right-wing political influence. Musk has aligned himself with anti-immigrant and conservative leaders, becoming a significant figure for far-right political movements globally.
This substantial spending spree marks a reversal from Musk's stance in mid-2023, when he indicated a desire to step back from large-scale political donations following the perceived failures of his "department of government efficiency" (Doge) initiative and public backlash to his political influence. His previous falling out with Trump also appeared to have diminished his interest in Washington politics.
Musk's political contributions are distributed across various political action committees, including his own America Pac, according to Reuters and The New York Times. His largest single contribution was $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a Super Pac focused on helping Republicans maintain Senate control. Other significant donations include $76 million to America Pac, $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund Republican Super Pac, and $10 million each to the Republican Governors Association and a Pac supporting Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton. He also gave $10 million in January to Nate Morris, a Republican Senate candidate from Kentucky who later withdrew from the race.
Some of Musk's funding supports advertising and messaging campaigns that employ anti-transgender rhetoric and label Democratic candidates as radical socialists. Musk has previously used X, the social media platform he owns, to target political opponents, spread election misinformation, and criticize transgender rights. He recently reposted a video from America Pac that highlighted previous statements by Talarico on gender, describing it as "madness."
Despite the immense scale of his political donations, the $366 million spent on the midterms represents less than 0.04% of Musk's estimated net worth of nearly $1 trillion.
