Music industry titans Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre believe artificial intelligence holds significant potential for music creation. Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records and Beats by Dr. Dre, shared his perspective, suggesting AI could become massive in songwriting and production.
During an interview, Iovine posited that AI could assist artists by helping them overcome creative blocks or experiment with new ideas. However, he also expressed concern that the current music landscape, driven by platforms like TikTok, prioritizes formulaic "big" hits over genuine "greatness," a phenomenon he attributes to fame replacing quality.
Iovine noted that artists can achieve substantial income through various avenues beyond music, which may lead some to reduce their efforts in music creation, impacting the overall quality of work across genres. He contrasted this with the past, when records were made for radio.
Discussions around AI in music are ongoing. Warner Music CEO Robert Kyncl emphasized that artists should have the choice to engage with AI tools. The Recording Academy, represented by CEO Harvey Mason Jr., has confirmed that while purely AI-generated songs will not be eligible for Grammy awards, music that incorporates AI elements will be honored, provided the majority of the creation is human-made.
