Compass adds Google AI leader Sissie Hsiao to board

Hsiao, who spent nearly two decades at Google, led the development of the Gemini app and managed the integration of generative AI and natural language technologies across Google's consumer products. She also previously served as vice president and general manager for Google's display, video, and app advertising businesses.

Compass CEO Robert Reffkin stated that Hsiao's expertise in AI and advertising is crucial at a time when technology is transforming the real estate industry. He highlighted the importance of board-level technology expertise for real estate firms aiming to deploy AI tools to reduce agent costs, automate operations, and enhance customer acquisition.

In conjunction with Hsiao's appointment, Charles Phillips has stepped down from the board. Phillips, who had served as a director since August 2020 and as lead independent director since February 2021, resigned to focus on other commitments. Frank Martell, who has been on the Compass board since November 2021, will succeed Phillips as lead independent director. Martell brings over 30 years of executive experience in real estate, data, and technology.

Steven Sordello, a board member since November 2020, will assume the role of chairperson of the nominating and corporate governance committee, while continuing his service on the audit committee. The company noted that board composition and governance structures are receiving increased scrutiny in the real estate and mortgage sectors, particularly concerning AI investments and risk management.
