Coinbase is significantly broadening its financial services by enabling US users to transfer their existing stock and exchange-traded fund (ETF) portfolios directly onto its platform. This move, announced Tuesday, marks a strategic push beyond cryptocurrency trading to become a more comprehensive financial platform, directly challenging traditional brokerages and fintech companies.
Through its Coinbase Advanced platform for active traders, the exchange now offers access to approximately 6,000 securities. Users can leverage the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS) to move their holdings from other brokerages without needing to sell them. This integration allows customers to manage stocks, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies within a single account.
In addition to stock transfers, Coinbase is enhancing its trading offerings with zero-commission trading, fractional shares, and up to 3.5% rewards on eligible USDC balances. The company is also introducing new products such as crypto and stock options, thematic equity index perpetual futures, and expanded prediction markets, with some features rolling out in the coming months.
This diversification strategy comes as Coinbase seeks to stabilize its revenue streams, which have historically been heavily influenced by the volatile nature of cryptocurrency prices. The company reported a surprise loss in the first quarter of 2026, with revenue falling short of expectations due to weaker trading activity, underscoring the need to reduce its dependence on the digital asset market.
