Citigroup is preparing to launch a Bitcoin custody service for institutional investors later this year, marking a significant step for the banking giant in the digital asset space. The new offering, part of Citi's Custody+ platform, is designed to allow institutional clients to hold Bitcoin alongside their traditional assets within a unified banking framework. This integration aims to streamline the process for investors, eliminating the need for separate systems and reducing latency.
According to Citi, the Custody+ service will enable clients to manage all asset servicing transactions through a single, seamless flow, providing continuous visibility and execution across various financial operations, including settlement, FX, cash, and data. The platform also offers flexibility for clients to integrate digital assets or develop their own offerings on top of Citi's infrastructure.
This move by Citi follows a trend of increasing institutional adoption of digital assets, supported by what the article describes as friendlier legislation and a pro-crypto approach from U.S. regulators. Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser has previously expressed the bank's commitment to being a leader in digital assets and has supported legislative efforts to clarify the regulatory landscape for digital tokens.
The bank's broader blockchain initiatives include Citi Token Services, which facilitates real-time cross-border payments using tokenized deposits. Citi has also been collaborating with other major banks, such as Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America, to explore stablecoin products.
