U.S. financial services firm Charles Schwab intends to significantly expand its workforce at its newly established global capability center in India, aiming to reach approximately 2,000 employees by the end of 2027. The company plans an initial hiring target of around 500 employees within the first year of operation.
The newly inaugurated center, located in Hyderabad, will focus on technology development, engineering, and operational support for Charles Schwab's U.S. businesses. The firm also plans to transition some technology work currently outsourced to contractors in India to be handled in-house at this new facility.
This expansion occurs at a time when many companies are adopting a cautious approach to increasing headcount, particularly in software and research and development roles, due to the integration of artificial intelligence for efficiency gains. Some firms, like Standard Chartered and Wells Fargo, have indicated that AI could lead to workforce reductions in certain areas.
However, experts suggest that new companies establishing operations in India will continue to build teams from scratch. India has become a leading global hub for capability centers, hosting over 2,100 such centers that employ approximately 2.36 million people and generate close to $100 billion in revenue annually. Financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Barclays, and American Express, constitute a significant portion of this workforce.
The state of Telangana, with Hyderabad as its capital, is a major destination for these centers, currently hosting more than 475 global centers and anticipating the addition of approximately 100 more in the coming year.
