Nine bodies of migrants have been recovered over the past two days from the shores of Tajoura, an eastern suburb of Tripoli, Libya, following the capsizing of their boat. The Tripoli Red Crescent stated that search and recovery operations are ongoing, with fears that more bodies may wash ashore as the boat was reportedly carrying about 19 people.
Separately, the charity ship EMERGENCY rescued 50 migrants from a wooden boat in international waters off Libya. During this operation, seven individuals were found dead, and two survivors were in critical condition due to suffocation. The rescued migrants stated they had departed from Zuwara, Libya, on August 16 and were from Somalia and Egypt. The group included 45 males, five females, and 29 unaccompanied minors.
Libya has been a primary transit route for migrants attempting to reach Europe since the 2011 uprising.
