Cathay Pacific is undertaking a significant $19 billion investment to enhance its fleet, cabins, lounges, and digital offerings as the airline celebrates its 80th anniversary. The initiative includes the introduction of new premium economy and business-class seats on a portion of its Boeing 777-300ER fleet.
The airline's strategy aligns with a broader industry trend where carriers are focusing on premium travel experiences to capture higher revenue, investing in lie-flat suites, enhanced dining, and lounge access. Competitors like Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines have also recently unveiled upgraded cabins for long-haul flights.
During an event in New York City, an attendee was able to test the new premium cabins. The upgraded seats are currently available on flights between Hong Kong and Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver. By 2027, these enhancements will also be featured on flights connecting New York-JFK and Hong Kong.
The price for these upgraded seats reflects the premium nature of the offering. For mid-November travel from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, one-way fares in premium economy range from $1,500 to $2,900, while business class tickets are priced between $3,700 and nearly $5,000, according to Cathay Pacific's website.
In premium economy, the airline emphasized a design focused on customer experience, with features intended to create more privacy and comfort compared to standard economy. A flight attendant demonstrated the footrest and recline functions of the premium economy seat.
