Jesse Pollak, the creator of the Base blockchain, is stepping back from leading the Base App after admitting that his strategy centered on on-chain social applications and creator coins was a miscalculation. Pollak stated that while developers spurred adoption through products like stablecoins and prediction markets, social applications "disintegrated completely," and he was "definitively wrong."
Pollak acknowledged that Base's focus on social left it behind competitors in key areas such as trading, tokenization, and payments. As part of a strategic pivot, leadership of the Base app will return to Coinbase, with crypto investor Jordan Fish, known as Cobie, overseeing its development. Fish will aim to make the Base app "the best damn app for onchain," expanding beyond the Base ecosystem.
Pollak will now be refocused on developing the underlying Base blockchain, positioning it as "the blockchain for global finance." The network's future priorities will center on trading, payments, and AI agents. Pollak welcomed competition from companies like Robinhood and Stripe in this endeavor.
