A potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX, two of Elon Musk's most prominent companies, could reshape the landscape of AI development and large-scale manufacturing, impacting their respective market valuations and future strategic directions.
Barclays analyst Dan Levy suggested that a merger between Tesla and SpaceX could be announced within weeks, potentially before Tesla's annual shareholder meeting scheduled for December 6. Levy views the potential combination as an "AI vertical integration play," aiming to merge Tesla's physical AI capabilities, such as its Robotaxi and Optimus robot, with SpaceX's virtual AI aspects, including Grok and Macrohard.
The development of the Terafab semiconductor manufacturing plant, a joint project between Tesla and SpaceX, is seen as a justification for the transaction, potentially alleviating financial strain and streamlining approvals. Elon Musk has alluded to potential actions due to the extensive collaboration between the two companies, stating at the All In Summit that "you can imagine an action one might take when there is so much close collaboration in so many areas."
Commercial relationships already exist between the companies, with Tesla purchasing SpaceX products and SpaceX integrating Tesla's robotaxi terminal. Tesla also previously invested $2 billion in Musk's AI firm, xAI, which later resulted in an ownership stake in SpaceX, further fueling merger speculation.
